Liquid Plumr or Real Plumber?

Liquid chemical drain cleaners like Liquid Plumr and Drano can be effective for clearing slightly clogged kitchen drains. Their effectiveness is based on the chemical interaction between their active ingredients — lye (sodium hydroxide) and bleach (sodium hypochlorite) and water. The heat generated from this combination produces a corrosive reaction that can help dissolve substances like soap, food and grease.

However, if you experience recurring drainage problems in your bath or kitchen, then that’s the time to call a licensed professional plumber like Brown & Sons.

Liquid Plumr and Drano are also NOT designed to clear up clogged toilets. If you experience blockage in your toilet that cannot be removed with a standard plunger, then the services of a licensed professional plumber are highly recommended. Liquid chemical drain cleaners are also not capable of clearing drainage problems associate with automatic dishwashers.

Although Liquid Plumr instructs on its website that it can effectively clear garbage disposals, we advise that you flush it with running cold water-not hot tap water as suggested. Consistent use of cold water with the garbage disposal helps to keep common blocking agents-like grease and fat-in a solid form. This allows them to pass more easily through the drain line and reduce residue build-up over time.

Clogged sewer lines require the expertise of licensed plumber to correct.
